The Rialto: Younger Poets Feature

I've been asked by Michael Mackmin to organise a 'ones to watch' feature for The Rialto's 25th anniversary edition -- published in May and including poems from Andrew Motion, Carol Ann Duffy and Tomaz Salamun, among many others.

I have been busy soliciting submissions from individuals (ongoing) I'd like to include, if possible, to make sure I can make a certain point or two with it. In the interests of fairness, however -- and to add an element of experimental fun -- I am also now seeking to broaden the catchment beyond my own network biases and peccadilloes with further recommendations and a short-deadline open call.

So, starting here at Curiosa: calling all poets, 35 and under! Please send 3-5 poems (no more than 5 sides) to this email address by 31st of March. These should either be previously unpublished or published somewhere of significantly lower profile than The Rialto (where Rialto would act as a greater showcase and validation of your work). Yes, it is a short deadline -- that's part of the challenge. It is also an experiment (for future work) to test or prove that such a submissions process might work well for things...

This is not limited to UK poets -- we are curious to see others, too -- but it will probably remain focused on the UK, based on the likely catchment. We'll see...

Depending on response, this may also develop into a regular feature, after establishing itself with this first introductory list, perhaps focusing on different genres or age groups, and including different submissions processes. So, get sending your poetry and spread the word! Please pass this on, in any way you see fit, to poets you feel fit the bill, or send me some work yourselves. But be quick! I look forward to reading your poems.

Send the poems to neopets? Is this an error or trolling?

Through a process that is pretty hilarious but too convoluted to explain (!) I accidentally pasted the wrong email address into the html code... fixed now!

Nathan, this is very good news indeed. I hope you will consider poets both from Voice Recognition, and Identity Parade, as well as the Oxfam DVD - among others - as worthy of inclusion in your worthwhile feature; also check out my Manhattan Review feature on a similar subject, last year. I imagine you will want to cast a wide net, but here are a few poets worth keeping in mind (others are mentioned in my various Intros and features and reviews as is): Emily Berry, James Brookes, Liz Berry, Heather Phillipson, Sam Jackson, Kavita Joshi, Alex McRae, Kayo Chingonyi, George Ttouli, Camellia Stafford, Sandeep Parmar, Christopher Horton, - gosh so many - can't name them all here.

Certainly, Todd. Indeed, the feature will be building on that good work of yours, which has kick-started a few things (and in which I am included, of course: thanks!) and taking in a couple of other things, too.

This sounds very exciting. Nathan, would you prefer attached word document or body of email, with biog-line or with? Thought I'd check as Rialto usually does things by post. Oh and thanks to Todd for the name-drop.

Hi Nathan, I would like to submit, but without Outlook Express on my computer it seems I'm unable to access the email address to which I need to send my poems.
Is there a way you can display the actual address?

Hi James, nice to have you drop by. Either is fine with me, but a Word Doc might preserve formatting more effectively -- should that be necessary?

And Anonymous (very honoured to have you here, by the way -- you've been writing some amazing poems for thousands of years) -- if you hold down control and then click on the link (on a Mac) or right click on the link and then select from the menu that appears (on a PC) you should be able to 'copy' the link and then 'paste' it into the addressee bar of your preferred email client. Hope that helps? Am trying to limit spamming by doing it this way...

Nathan, I hope you will also consider Eric Cartman, Eric Bananaman, The Miliband Brothers, The Mitford Sisters, The Midwitch Cuckoos, J.H. Christ (still 33), Philip Larkin Jr. III, Wordsworth's Wonderful Boy, The Children of the Inner Temple, The Choir of St Winifred's Primary, John Venables, chopped liver, the Pole Star, Keston Sutherland, Thyrsis, and young Albert out of 'Albert and the Lion' (the Lion is worth a look too).

All are doing astonishing work at the moment.

All in there already, Ron, you funny man. Apart from Keston. Oh, no, wait... he is! And who can forget Eric Cartman's seminal 'Karl's Mom's a Bitch...' breathtaking, from beginning to end.
